Yangon: The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar in late March has risen to 3,354.
According to Qatar News Agency, the preliminary tally indicates that 4,850 people were injured, in addition to a large number of individuals still missing under the rubble.
The earthquake, which measured 7.7 on the Richter scale, struck the country on March 28 and is considered one of the strongest earthquakes Myanmar has experienced in nearly a century. It led to the collapse of buildings, including hospitals, and destroyed residential communities, leaving millions of people without shelter or basic services.
This earthquake comes at a time when Myanmar is facing a severe humanitarian crisis, as the affected areas were already hosting 1.6 million internally displaced people due to the ongoing conflict since 2021. The disaster has further worsened the suffering of 20 million people in need of humanitarian aid, while more than 15 million are experiencing hunger.
