Doha: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday held closed consultations on Lebanon regarding the enforcement of UN Resolution 1701, which was adopted in 2006. Reviewing the overall security situation in Lebanon, United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert said the current situation is characterized by cautious optimism, emphasizing that although the cessation of hostilities remains resilient, this does not imply the full cessation of all military operations on Lebanese territory.
According to Qatar News Agency, Hennis-Plasschaert highlighted the continuous presence of Israeli occupation forces on Lebanese territory, alongside ongoing bombing operations, which could easily lead to dangerous consequences on the Lebanese side of the Blue Line. She affirmed that there is a desperate need for diplomatic and political discussions to pave the way for the full implementation of Resolution 1701.
Regarding the broad vacuum in international funding for Lebanon, Hennis-Plasschaert said the fiasco in launching the recovery and reconstruction process will be profoundly costly, as people should feel the fruits of stability for themselves.
