Gaza City: The World Health Organization (WHO) stepped up its relief efforts in Gaza by distributing fuel, medical supplies, and medicines to support tens of thousands of people who have endured dire health conditions for the past 15 months.
According to Qatar News Agency, in a post on X, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that since the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, WHO has intensified its health response. He explained that the resources delivered are enough to provide 50,000 patients with essential care, including maternity services, trauma treatment, malnutrition support, and care for non-communicable diseases. These supplies also aim to enhance infection prevention in healthcare facilities. He underscored that the situation in Gaza remains extremely challenging, with operations being complex.
He noted that after 15 months of relentless Israeli bombardment and heavy fighting, the truce, which took effect last Sunday, has allowed for the delivery of 70,000 liters of fuel. This supply is enough to partially power 20 health centers, hospitals, and ambulances in Gaza City. He added that fuel is also allocated to generators in healthcare facilities struggling with power outages.
The UN official further highlighted that WHO has delivered medical supplies from its Gaza stockpiles to six hospitals, medical facilities, and 21 emergency medical crews in northern and southern parts of Gaza Strip. These areas have received only limited aid since the conflict began on October 7, 2023, compounded by extensive damage to Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure.
