Arab League Calls for Urgent International Action to Support Morocco and Libya

The Arab League called on the international community to take immediate and rapid action to provide all forms of humanitarian support necessary to mitigate the effects of the earthquake and hurricane that struck Morrocco and Libya.

The Arab region is facing multiple humanitarian crises recently due to natural disasters, climate change and armed conflicts, causing the deterioration of vital sectors in many countries in the region, including health, education and other basic sectors that provide services to citizens. These prolonged crises have affected All countries of the region, whether directly or indirectly, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector at the Arab League Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh said Thursday at a press conference organized by the Arab League General Secretariate in cooperation with the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO) to discuss the humanitarian situation in the Arab region.

Abu Ghazaleh expressed thanks and appreciation to the Arab countries and their full solidarity, as well as the Arab and international donor agencies and the UN agencies for their contributions to the rescue and relief operations. She also commended the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization for its humanitarian efforts in the Arab region.

She noted that the General Secretariat of the Arab League aspires to cooperate - through its various working mechanisms - with all humanitarian agencies working in the Arab region, in order to coordinate efforts, exchange information, and provide humanitarian support to those affected by natural or man-made disasters.

Abu Ghazaleh said that the Arab League is working, through its specialized ministerial councils and affiliated organizations, to provide support to all Arab countries suffering from humanitarian conditions, as well as to countries hosting refugees depending on available resources.

She noted that work is underway to provide aid to the State of Palestine, as well as urgent aid to the State of Libya in implementation of the decision of the Council of Arab Health Ministers.

She added that the Council of Arab Health Ministers also worked to provide urgent health aid to Tunisia, Somalia, the Union of the Comoros, Lebanon and Yemen; and also provided support to the Sudanese Ministry of Health on July 20, which included 37 tons of medical supplies and rescue medicines, in addition to the support provided by the Council of Arab Ministers of Social Affairs on August 28, which included 25 tons of humanitarian, social and basic necessities for daily life.
