This victory marked Barcelona's first title this season under German coach Hansi Flick, giving them a two-title lead over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup. On the other hand, Real Madrid failed to claim the title, missing the chance to equalize their number of Super Cup wins against their arch-rivals and to avenge their 4-0 defeat to Barcelona in the first leg of La Liga at home.
