Baghdad: The Iraqi Manuscripts House has commenced the establishment of a national database for manuscripts in Iraq as part of its projects for 2025. In a statement, Dr. Ahmed Karim Al Aliawi, director general of the house, emphasized that this initiative follows the first survey of manuscript-holding libraries in the country. The aim is to safeguard the Iraqi national inventory of manuscripts located in various libraries across the governorates. This effort is in line with the Antiquities and Heritage Law No. 55 of 2002, which seeks to protect manuscript heritage from extinction and prevent illegal trafficking in archaeological and heritage properties.
According to Qatar News Agency, Al Aliawi highlighted that the national database will serve as a resource for researchers, investigators, research centers, and universities both within Iraq and internationally. It will also outline a national map for manuscripts, providing scientific and social services alongside the preservation and protection of these inval
uable cultural assets.
