Database for Manuscripts Established in Iraq

Baghdad: The Iraqi Manuscripts House has initiated the development of a national database for manuscripts in Iraq, aligning with its projects set for 2025. This effort marks a significant step towards safeguarding the country’s manuscript heritage.

According to Qatar News Agency, Dr. Ahmed Karim Al Aliawi, director general of the Iraqi Manuscripts House, announced that the project follows the first comprehensive survey of libraries holding manuscripts across Iraq. This initiative aims to protect the national inventory of manuscripts located in various libraries throughout the country’s governorates. It seeks to prevent the loss of manuscript heritage and combat illegal trafficking in archaeological and heritage properties, in accordance with the Antiquities and Heritage Law No. 55 of 2002.

Dr. Al Aliawi emphasized that the national database will serve as a valuable resource for researchers, investigators, research centers, and universities both within Iraq and internationally. The database is expected to create a national map of manuscripts, offering scientific and social services while ensuring the preservation and protection of these historical documents.
