Death Toll Among Newborns in Gaza Mounting, WHO Confirms

General

Geneva, The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed the increasing mortality rates among the newborns in Gaza due to the Israeli aggression that has been continuing for 179 days. The death toll among newborns in Gaza is mounting and babies are born weighing less than the normal threshold, with many physicians in maternity hospitals reporting significant increase in the number of babies who are born with low weight and do not survive the postpartum period because they have been born too small, spokesperson for WHO Dr Margaret Harris said during a press conference on Tuesday. The Kamal Adwan, the only hospital in northern Gaza, records the admission of 15 malnourished babies on daily basis, she added, stressing that needs are sharply increasing more than ever. Harris pointed out that WHO cannot set accurate figures about the mortality cases among children due to the devastation inflicted upon the strip following six months of the Israeli war. She stated that numerous people do not even go to the hospit al. Regarding the stabilization (inpatient care) center that was established last week, Harris underlined that patients who are hypnotized at the center are normally sick and malnourished children.
