Doha: The Doha Political Declaration, issued on Tuesday during the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, has reaffirmed the commitment to previous UN frameworks concerning social development.
According to Qatar News Agency, the declaration saw heads of state, government, and delegations participating in the summit emphasize the importance of building a just, inclusive, equitable, and sustainable world. This involves addressing existing gaps, assessing progress, and recommitting to the 1995 Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development. The declaration highlighted the urgent need to tackle profound social challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and social exclusion, which affect every country, by addressing their structural causes and consequences.
The declaration stressed that poverty eradication, the promotion of full and productive employment, decent work for all, and social integration are core themes of social development that are interrelated and mutually reinforcing. It emphasized the necessity of creating an enabling environment to pursue all three objectives simultaneously.
The Doha Declaration also asserted that social development and social justice are crucial for achieving and maintaining peace and security. It stated that social development and social justice cannot be realized without peace, security, and respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The leaders at the summit expressed their determination to promote social development and social justice, guided by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law. They reaffirmed their commitment to the Copenhagen Declaration and Program of Action, as well as further initiatives for social development adopted by the General Assembly, including at its twenty-fourth special session.
The declaration reiterated the commitment to the full, timely, and effective implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals. It emphasized upholding all the principles enshrined in the agenda, including the promise to leave no one behind, reaching the furthest behind first, and placing people at the center of development, with due consideration for present and future generations and a commitment to safeguarding the planet.
