EU Agrees to Phase Out Russian Gas Imports by End of 2027

Luxembourg: The European Union will phase out all Russian gas imports by the end of 2027, as the majority of the bloc’s energy ministers agreed on Monday. Energy ministers meeting in Luxembourg approved a plan by the European Commission to phase out both pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from Russia, subject to approval by the European Parliament.

According to Qatar News Agency, EU foreign policy chief Kaya Kallas confirmed in statements that she expects the 19th package of sanctions against Russia to be approved this week, as EU foreign ministers are scheduled to meet later today. The European Union has been trying to wean itself off its reliance on Russian fuel since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022.

Russia provided 19 percent of the European Union’s total gas imports in 2024, compared to 45 percent in 2021.
