G7 Reaffirms Unity, Threatens Sanctions on Russia over Ukraine Ceasefire Proposal

Doha: The Group of Seven (G7) On Friday reaffirmed its unity and threatened to impose sanctions on Russia if it does not accept the proposed ceasefire in Ukraine.

According to Qatar News Agency, in the final statement of its three-day meeting in Canada, the G7 expressed unwavering support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and warned of new sanctions against Russia should it reject the ceasefire proposal.

The G7 nations — comprising the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States — have expressed concerns over the return of Donald Trump to the White House, his rapprochement with Russia, and his imposition of trade tariffs on both allies and competitors.

The United States has been pushing for a ceasefire in Ukraine as soon as possible, exerting significant pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who agreed on Tuesday to a 30-day ceasefire, conditional on Russia’s compliance.

However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has voiced reservations, citing “important issues” that need to be resolved before reaching a ceasefire agreement.
