GCC-Iraq power interconnection project launched

The GCC Interconnection Grid is one of the most strategic projects in the region, said Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Yaser bin Ibrahim Humaidan.

He stressed the contribution of the project contributed in reducing the cases of partial and total outages of the Gulf networks, by providing instant support through power transmission.

The minister made the statement as he attended a ceremony hosted in the city of Khobar in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to launch the power interconnection project between the GCC countries and the Republic of Iraq.

He indicated that the project will reinforce cooperation and meet part of the demand for electric energy, especially in southern Iraq, in addition to supplying Iraqi electrical grid with at least 500 Megawatts.

He noted Bahrain’s drive to strengthen joint cooperation with other countries in an integrated manner, including infrastructure projects and basic services, and achieve the desired development goals to achieve sustainability, in line with the vision by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

“Connection with Iraq will contribute to increasing the economic operation of the network at the regional level in preparation for expansion at the Arab and international levels, as well as increasing reliability and raising energy efficiency in the Gulf network”, he said.
