German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged Friday to continue his country's support for Ukraine in its war with Russia during his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Berlin. Scholz said, "It is clear that peace can only be achieved on the basis of international law, and that this will require enormous efforts," stressing that he will not accept a peace dictated by Russia. He stressed that Germany and its European partners will send more defense equipment to Ukraine this year, referring to German aid worth four billion euros in 2025. He noted that he and the Ukrainian president agreed on the necessity of Russia's participation in a peace conference to ensure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine, stressing that what he called "playing with the time factor will not succeed," because his country will not stop supporting Ukraine. For his part, the Ukrainian president expressed his hope that the war with Russia would end, calling for continued military support for his country. He said, "It is very important for us that this aid does not decrease next year." Several European countries, including Germany, have pledged to continue providing military aid to Ukraine, in light of the ongoing Russian military operation against it since February 24, 2022.
