The Transitional Council in Haiti has named Garry Conille as the nations next prime minister, in an effort to end the political turmoil and continued violence. The council unanimously elected Conille, paving the way for the country's first general elections since 2016. The step comes as Haiti awaits the deployment of a multinational force led by Kenya and backed by the United Nations and the United States, in order to regain control of the capital, Port-au-Prince, where gangs have caused the displacement of more than 90,000 people within one month. More than 360 thousand have become homeless in recent years after gangs destroyed homes. Conille has been UNICEFs regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean since January 2023 and previously served as Haitis prime minister from October 2011 to May 2012 under then President Michel Martelly. He replaces Michel Patrick Boisvert, who was named interim prime minister after Ariel Henry resigned via letter in late April. Source: Qatar News Agency
