Paris, Bahrain has achieved its first Olympic medal at the 33rd Olympic Games, currently held in Paris until 11 August 2024. Bahraini athlete Winfred Yavi secured the gold medal in the women's 3000m steeplechase final, setting a new Olympic record with a time of 8:52.76 minutes. This significant victory was observed by His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS), Chairman of the General Sports Authority (GSA), and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC). HH Shaikh Khalid followed the competition with great enthusiasm as Yavi crossed the finish line. His Highness Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Vice President of GSA; His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Vice President of BOC; His Highness Shaikh Faisal bin Khalid Al Khalifa, His Highness Shaikh Abdullah bin Khalid Al Khalifa, Dr. Abdulrahman Sadiq Askar, CEO of GSA, and Faris Mustafa Al Kooheji, Secretary General of BOC, were present, along with several memb ers of the official delegation. The achievement marks Bahrain's first medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics and adds to its record of two gold and two silver medals. HH Shaikh Khalid congratulated His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, as well as His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of HM the King for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs, and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS), on this sporting achievement. HH Shaikh Khalid expressed his happiness and pride, highlighting the Kingdom's efforts which have resulted in winning the first Olympic medal in Paris. HH Shaikh Khalid said that Yavi delivered an exceptional performance worthy of Bahrain's name, reflecting her determination and strong will. HH Shaikh Khalid commended the unwavering support of the Kingdom's leadership and the continuous efforts of all members of the Bahraini delegation and emphasised the com mitment to investing in sports and continuing to support Bahrain's athletes. HH Shaikh Khalid thanked everyone who contributed to this success, affirming that this accomplishment was a result of the Bahraini athletes' ability to compete at the highest levels and achieve global success. HH Shaikh Khalid underscored Bahrain's capability to compete in the international sports stage and achieve major milestones. This medal serves as a new starting point for Bahraini sports towards broader horizons and a bright future in the global sports field, HH said. HH added that it also motivates other athletes competing in athletics, as well as the wrestling and weightlifting teams, to achieve the best results in the remaining Olympic competitions. Bahrain's participation in the athletics competitions at the Paris 2024 Olympics eill continue with athlete Salwa Eid competing in the women's 400m semi-finals, scheduled for 8:45 PM (9:45 PM Bahrain time). Eid aims to reach the finals. She is ranked 13th globally, with a p ersonal best time of 48.14 seconds and a season-best of 49.66 seconds.
