Lebanese FM Discusses Southern Developments with UN Coordinator

Beirut: Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji met on Friday with United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert to discuss the latest political developments and the situation in southern Lebanon.

According to Qatar News Agency, during the meeting, Rajji called for increased pressure on Israel to fulfill its commitments under the cessation of hostilities declaration and UN Security Council Resolution 1701. He emphasized the need for Israel’s full and unconditional withdrawal from all occupied Lebanese territories, an end to its violations of Lebanese sovereignty, and the release of Lebanese detainees.

Yesterday, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam reiterated that Israel’s continued occupation of positions in southern Lebanon constitutes an infringement on Lebanon’s sovereignty.

A ceasefire agreement in southern Lebanon came into effect on November 27 last year, stipulating the withdrawal of Israeli forces from border villages and towns in southern Lebanon within 60 days. The Beirut government later agreed to extend the deadline until February 18, but Israeli forces remain stationed at five points.
