The new Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called for recognizing a Palestinian state in order to achieve peace in the Middle East. "The Palestinian state must be recognized just like the state of Israel. This has been Mexico's position for many years," she said in her first statement on the subject since taking office on October 1. During her daily press conference, Sheinbaum also condemned the violence in the Middle East and said that "war will never lead to a good destination." The leftist president is of European Jewish origin, but in January 2009, in a public letter, she criticized a previous Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip. Sheinbaum recalled that the previous Mexican government led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador condemned the attack launched by the Palestinian resistance movement (Hamas) on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip.
