Doha: The Ministry of Public Health in partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), Sidra Medicine, and Naufar is celebrating World Mental Health Day, recognized annually on Oct. 10.

The ministry said in a statement that this years theme is “Its Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace” to highlight the importance of creating work environments that promote mental well-being and support employees psychological needs.

Director of the Non-Communicable Diseases Prevention Department at the Ministry of Public Health Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Al-Thani said, “In recent years, Qatar has prioritized the expansion of mental health services and support, with a focus on improving access, reducing stigma, and integrating physical and mental health care. It is a testament to the commitment of Qatars public health sector providers that they are all working together to raise awareness on World Mental Health Day.” Globally, mental health issues are increasingly recognized as m
ajor contributors to illness and disability. While the workplace can be a source of stress, it can also play a key role in promoting well-being. Employers have a responsibility to foster a culture where mental health is valued as a vital part of overall health. Organizations that prioritize mental health are more likely to reduce absenteeism, improve productivity, and enhance employee engagement.

Chair of Mental Health Services at HMC Dr. Majid Al Abdulla said that “in an era where stress, burnout, and mental health conditions have become prominent in the workplace, now is the time for employers to prioritize mental health as a core pillar of their organizational culture. Employees who feel that their workplace cares about their mental well-being are more likely to be engaged, productive, and satisfied with their jobs.” For those experiencing mental health challenges, the first step towards recovery is often reaching out to a friend or healthcare professional, explained Dr. Samya Ahmad Al Abdulla, Senior Con
sultant of Family Medicine and Executive Director of Operations at PHCC. Dr. Al Abdulla emphasized, “asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed by stress or anxiety, reaching out to a friend or professional can be the first step towards better mental health.” Chair of the Psychiatry Department at Sidra Medicine Professor Muhammad Waqar Azeem said that “at Sidra Medicine, we believe that mental health is vital to overall well-being, and it is essential for workplaces to take an active role in supporting it. Studies have consistently shown that when mental health is prioritized, employees become healthier, happier, and more engaged, resulting in increased productivity. By advancing healthcare in Qatar and beyond, we are dedicated to setting a standard where mental health advocacy is at the core of our approach to exceptional care.” For his part, Assistant Director General at Naufar Dr. Khalifa Al Kuwari said that “supporting and promoting staff mental h
ealth and well-being is important for both individuals and employers alike. Naufar’s Employee Assistance Programmes work with employers and their staff to help people overcome challenges, retain their employment, and live healthy and productive lives” The ministry stressed that anyone experiencing poor mental health, including stress, anxiety, and depression, can call the National Mental Health Helpline for free and confidential support. The helpline is staffed by a team of mental health professionals who can provide immediate assessment and support.
