A new Danish study has warned that sleeping too little or too much may be harmful to health, especially in the case of type 2 diabetes. As part of their study, a team examined the sleep and health habits of 400 people who were recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and had suffered from symptoms for more than 3 years. It turns out that oversleeping can lead to a 31 percent increase in damage to small blood vessels in diabetics, which can lead to blindness and kidney failure, while not getting enough sleep can increase damage by 38 percent. The damage caused by irregular sleep patterns increases with age, with 12 percent of study participants not getting enough sleep and 28 percent sleeping excessively. Microvascular problems can also lead to high blood pressure, leading to heart disease and strokes. Despite the study's findings regarding the relationship between sleep and health, it emphasized the need for more research to determine the role of sleep duration and quality in patients.
