Doha: HE Omani Minister of Social Development, Dr. Laila bint Ahmed Al Najjar, emphasized the importance of achieving social inclusion and promoting justice and equality by prioritizing these elements in national programs and policies.
According to Qatar News Agency, in her address at the Second World Summit for Social Development, currently being held in Doha, Dr. Al Najjar highlighted the significance that the Sultanate of Oman places on social development. She described it as the foundation for building the Omani citizen and pointed out ongoing efforts to eradicate poverty, which aligns with the first goal of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These efforts include launching a social protection system that aims to enhance integration and justice in the distribution of social benefits.
Dr. Al Najjar elaborated on the Omani initiatives that provide direct financial support services and develop economic empowerment, housing, health support programs, and free education. She also mentioned the adoption of the National Employment Strategy, which seeks to align education and training with labor market demands, while also fostering entrepreneurship and innovation as viable avenues for creating job opportunities.
Further, Dr. Al Najjar detailed national policies such as the Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, programs for inclusive rehabilitation and employment, and initiatives that ensure access to educational and health services. These are complemented by integrated care programs for the elderly, family counseling services, and initiatives aimed at preventing domestic violence and protecting children.
She stressed the necessity for periodic evaluation and review of progress while addressing challenges through continuous development of social monitoring systems and improving coordination among government bodies, private sectors, and civil society organizations. Dr. Al Najjar reaffirmed Oman’s commitment to the principles of the Copenhagen Declaration and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, underscoring the nation’s confidence in building a cohesive society and an inclusive economy that actively engages its citizenry in shaping the future.
