Santiago Pena of Paraguay's ruling Party has won the presidential election, according to the Paraguay's top electoral court.
With more than 96% of the ballots counted, Pena, of Paraguay's ruling conservative Colorado Party, garnered close to 43% of the votes, widely surpassing his main rival, the Superior Court of Electoral Justice confirmed.
Efrain Alegre, candidate of the Concertacion Nacional coalition, had nearly 27.5%, with no chance of gaining on Pena.
Pena will succeed President Mario Abdo Benitez, also from the long-governing Colorado Party, to govern for the next five years.
Paraguayans have also voted to elect the parliamentarians, where the Colorado Party got the largest share in the Senate.
