Qatar Highlights Concerns Over ICT Infrastructure Attacks at ITU Council Meeting

Geneva: The State of Qatar took part in the annual Council meeting of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) held in Geneva. The meeting focused on a Gulf initiative addressing the impact of targeting civilian ICT infrastructure in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, along with its regional and global implications.

According to Qatar News Agency, Qatar was represented by Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Mansoori, Second Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the UN Office in Geneva. Al Mansoori emphasized Qatar's support for a statement delivered by the United Arab Emirates on behalf of the GCC states and Jordan. The statement expressed significant concern over the targeting of telecommunications infrastructure in several countries due to Iranian attacks.

Al Mansoori highlighted that attacks on civilian infrastructure, such as ICT facilities, are a violation of the ITU Constitution and relevant regulations, as they constitute harmful interference. He pointed out that these actions have considerable consequences, resulting in immediate operational disruptions and long-term strategic and economic impacts.

He expressed hope that the ITU Council and its members would address this critical issue by supporting the joint contribution submitted by the GCC states and Jordan.
