Doha: Qatar University Press (QU Press) has released a new book titled “Geopolitics: Theories, Strategies, and Applications” by Dr. Emad Y. Kaddorah. This 600-page book delves into geopolitical thought from both theoretical and practical angles, covering its inception in 1899 and its influence on global regions and state strategies up to 2025.
According to Qatar News Agency, the first two chapters of the book address the origins of the term “geopolitics”, its core concept, defining features, and the distinctions between geopolitics, political geography, and geostrategy. The book also examines the foundational theories and strategies envisioned by the field’s founders, tracing their lives within the context of their academic journeys, institutional settings, and the political dynamics of their era.
Dr. Kaddorah extends the discussion beyond the analysis of theories and concepts at the time of their emergence, exploring their continued relevance and impact on current state policies. The book further analyzes how geopolitical ideas, influenced by foundational theories, have evolved to meet state needs. A comprehensive chapter is dedicated to critical geopolitics, which emerged during an era of expanding networks and interconnectivity.
The book scrutinizes new forms derived from critical geopolitics and provides a scholarly critique of these approaches, particularly highlighting their lack of alternatives and specific practical policies. “Geopolitics: Theories, Strategies, and Applications” is regarded as one of the first major works in the Arab world to extensively address the topic of geopolitics.
Despite the resurgence of intensive geopolitical studies in the West over the past three decades, there has been a lack of specialized Arabic books or studies in this field. This book makes a significant contribution to the development of geopolitical studies and concepts, both generally and from an Arab perspective in particular.
