The Governor of Sulaymaniyah, Haval Abu Bakr, announced today, Friday, his official resignation from his position.

Abu Bakr said in a statement: "I officially submitted my resignation in September 2021 and it has not been accepted yet, which prompted me to resubmit the request again in February 2022, and despite that, a final decision has not been made regarding it yet."

He added that "my resignation from the position came after broad support from most political forces and government bodies, including the Ministry of Interior and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in the Kurdistan Region," indicating that "I assumed my position in January 2017 based on the directives of the late Neshirwan Mustafa, founder of the Change Movement, with the aim of providing services away from partisanship and discrimination."

The Governor of Sulaymaniyah called on the Kurdistan Regional Government to "make a decision to accept my resignation," stressing that "I will continue to work as a neutral technocrat until my request is decided, or the position is handed over to a suitable successor according to legal procedures."
