Suspect accused of raising money illegally in custody

A man accused of raising money illegally and spreading false news has been remanded in custody pending investigation.

The suspect appeared in a video clip circulated online as he was bragging in a speech about his efforts to collect donations to pay the blood money for a convict in a Gulf country and settle disputes, said the Head of Ministries and Public Bodies Prosecution.

The Public Prosecution launched a probe into the incident after receiving a notification from the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Evidence.

The accused who admitted in the video to collecting money for non-public purposes, wanted to show his influence and ability to resolve and settle disputes between people without resorting to specialised authorities.

The Public Prosecution faced the accused with the evidence that corroborates his involvement in collecting money illegally and spreading false news which would disrupt public order. It also directed to inquire from specialised authorities about the amount of money he had collected.
