HE Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Subaie, Minister of Municipality participated in the International Marine Exhibition & Conference which was held in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In his address at the conference, Al-Subaie referred to the efforts of the State of Qatar in the area of national food security, as a step towards regional and global food security. As a result of Qatar?s great efforts in the field of food security, the State ranked first in the Gulf and Arab countries and 24th globally in the Global Food Security Initiative (GFSI 2021).

The Minister assured that the State has paid great attention to developing the local fish farming projects, with the aim of increasing local fish production as well as raising the rate of self-sufficiency in fish from other sources without resorting to overexploitation of fisheries.

He also noted that the Aquatic Research Center had been established and equipped with the latest technologies in fish farming systems. The center has already started operating in 2020. About 1.5 million fingerlings were produced from small local fish (Greasy grouper, finned black seabream, Siganus rivulatus) by the end of December 2021, and about 6 million shrimp larvae were produced by the end of 2021.

In this regard, under the directives of HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of the State, may God protect him, in order to enhance the private sector role in the economic areas within the State; Qatar has adopted a set of projects related to fish and shrimp farming, and they are currently being implemented by private sector companies using the latest scientific technologies in the area of fish farming, taking into account all environmental requirements which ensure the safety of marine resources.
