The United Nations expressed its readiness to support Gabon in the transitional phase to return to the constitutional system after the coup against President Ali Bongo on August 30.
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Central Africa, Abdou Abare, said in press statements, today, Thursday, that he informed the military commander of Gabon, General Brice Olighe Nguema, that the institutions of the international organization are ready to support the country as it enters a new phase, pointing out that the various UN agencies will conduct “Once we know the road map, the timetable, the appointment of the new government, the necessary communications to support Libreville, and the path for Gabon’s return to civilian rule.”
Officers from the Gabonese army, led by General Brice Olegé Nguema, seized power in the eighth coup in West and Central Africa in three years, minutes after it was announced that Ali Bongo had won a third term in the elections, the results of which the coup plotters annulled, considering that they “lacked credibility.”
Last Monday, the Economic Community of Central African States (ECAS) suspended Gabon's membership, but sent Faustin Archange Touadera, President of the Central African Republic, as its representative, to meet with General Nguema./End
