The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) announced today, Wednesday, its welcome to the start of the electoral campaign for the parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region scheduled to be held on October 20, 2024. The United Nations Relief Web website quoted the statement of the UNAMI mission, stressing the importance of ensuring an electoral atmosphere free of violence and intimidation, and focusing participants on peaceful competition between opinions and programs, to enable voters to cast their votes in the ballot boxes, by making informed decisions. According to the statement, the United Nations mission hopes that candidates, other political actors and all media outlets will promote a climate of respect, inclusiveness and dialogue throughout the electoral campaign, stressing the importance of "the credibility of these elections in creating a safe environment for all candidates and voters, especially women who often face different challenges during the electoral process." The UN state ment called for the need to "address any disputes related to the elections through available mechanisms, including those established by the Independent High Electoral Commission." The statement concluded by stressing the continuation of UNAMI's support for a fair and transparent electoral process that reflects the aspirations of "all people in the Kurdistan Region."
