Batna: An earthquake measuring 3.1 magnitude on the Richter scale struck Monday in Batna province, eastern Algeria. The tremor was felt across the region, though no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage have been reported.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Algerian Center for Research in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Geophysics stated that the epicenter of the quake was located 25 km southeast of Bitam in Batna province. This event follows a recent 3.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Jijel province, also in eastern Algeria, on January 18.
Algeria is no stranger to seismic activity, experiencing occasional earthquakes and tremors. The most severe earthquake in recent history was the 6.8 magnitude quake that devastated the northern province of Boumerdes in May 2003, resulting in the deaths of 2,277 people and causing extensive material damage and destruction.
