Derasat, AMH to organize genetic disorder awareness symposium

The Bahrain Center for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat) will organize a symposium themed ‘Awareness of Genetic Disorders: Coping and Methods of Prevention’, in cooperation with the American Mission Hospital in Bahrain on May 23.

The symposium will witness participating doctors, specialists, and researchers from multiple countries with the aim to transfer knowledge and exchange expertise in this area; highlighting genetic disorders and their prevention methods; and mitigating their effects on individuals and society, especially Down, Marfan and Kleinfelter syndromes.

Three main sessions comprise the symposium. The first session will describe the most common genetic disorders; the second session will examine challenges to individuals regarding infertility and childbearing; and the third and final session will emphasize the role of psychological care when dealing with patients and their loved ones.

Leading doctors in this field will join several experts and specialists to determine the best methods to cope with genetic disorders, their implications, and prevention methods, guided by advanced global experiences and approved best practices.

The symposium will also witness the announcement of opinion poll results on Bahraini society’s awareness of genetic disorders, conducted last March and April.

This symposium continues Derasat Center’s efforts to focus on opening cooperation channels with various local and international establishments through joint events, contributing to more knowledge exchange and transferring expertise in all areas, and highlighting successful experiences that support society’s advancement and sustain development.
