Doha: Qatari table tennis stars secured two medals - a gold and a bronze - in the mixed doubles category on the penultimate day of the competition at the ongoing 4th Gulf Games in Doha, which will continue until May 22.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Qatari duo of Mohammed Abdulwahab and Aya Mohammed clinched the gold medal after defeating the Emirati pair of Ali Al Hawai and Noura Al Maazmi 3-0 in the final. Meanwhile, the Qatari pair of Abdullah Abdulwahab and Mariam Ali secured third place and the bronze medal by overcoming the Bahraini duo of Rashid Khalid and Rayan Emad 3-0 in the third-place match.
The tournament is set to continue with the third-place matches for the men's and women's singles and men's doubles categories. This will be followed by the men's singles final, featuring an all-Saudi matchup, and the women's singles final between Qatar's Aya Mohammed and Mariam Ali. The men's doubles final will feature Qatar's Mohammed Abdulwahab and Abdullah Abdulwahab against Saudi Arabia's Ali Al Khadrawi and Abdulaziz Boushlibi. The table tennis competitions at the Gulf Games will conclude with the crowning of the winners in all categories.
Chairperson of the Bahrain Table Tennis Association, Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa, highlighted the significant progress achieved by Gulf sports, praising the high level of skill displayed in the table tennis competitions. She noted the intense rivalry and excitement among all participating teams.
In a press statement, she emphasized that the Gulf sports gathering holds a special value beyond competition, embodying the spirit of brotherhood among Gulf nations. The slogan "One Gulf, One Heart" truly expressed this spirit and resonated with all participants.
She commended the exceptional organization of the tournament, noting the high professional standard of hosting in terms of facilities and administration. This provided an ideal environment for athletes to perform at their best. Qatar's ability to organize tournaments brilliantly was lauded, along with the large audience turnout and enthusiastic engagement, reflecting the event's importance in Gulf sports.
