European Commission President Stresses Europe’s Need to Be Able to Protect Itself from Direct Threats

Brussels: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today that the European Union requires special measures in what she described as exceptional circumstances. She emphasized the importance of Europe remaining prepared and capable of shielding itself from immediate threats.

According to Qatar News Agency, von der Leyen made these remarks before the start of an emergency European summit in Brussels on Ukraine and matters related to European security and defense. She noted that Europe and Ukraine are at a pivotal juncture, underscoring that the primary goal is to help Ukraine reach a position where it can protect itself and work toward a lasting, equitable peace.

Meanwhile, European Council President Antonio Costa affirmed that European security and defense are closely connected to that of Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the substantial European support his country has received since the onset of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

In a related development, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, whose country currently holds the EU’s rotating presidency, described safeguarding the Union’s eastern borders as a foremost priority. He acknowledged that the situation is both complex and difficult, but asserted that Europe is now fully aware of its responsibilities.

European leaders are also expected to endorse the European Commission’s proposed ReArm Europe plan, which seeks to raise Euros 800 billion (approximately $865 billion) for defense investments.
