H.E. Sheikh Thani Bin Hamad Al Thani crowned the winners of the Qatar Gold Sword at QREC Al Rayyan Racecourse on Thursday, 7 April. after Umm Qarn’s ABBES and Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki’s IN THE NIGHT won the Purebred Arabian and Thoroughbred Gr1 features respectively. H.E. Issa Bin Mohammed Al Mohannadi, QREC Chairman, was present during the trophy presentation ceremonies and also crowned the winners of the winners of the Qatar Silver Sword.
ABBES
Umm Qarn retained the Gr1 Qatar Gold Sword for Purebred Arabians with a fantastic head victory by ABBES (FR) (TM Fred Texas x Raqiyah), wrapping up superb day for Umm Qarn and jockey Ronan Thomas with three victories each and an impressive achievement for trainer Alban de Mieulle who scored four victories as well as saddling the first three home in the feature with Al Shaqab Racing’s MWARID (FR) (Amer) the runner-up under Soufiane Saadi and Umm Qarn’s JABALAH (FR) (Al Mamun Monlau) third under Carlos Henrique.
IN THE NIGHT
The Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki-owned and trained IN THE NIGHT (IRE) (Shamardal x Surprise Moment) lands the Gr1 Qatar Gold Trophy, adding a new black-type title to his impressive tally. Under Tomas Lukasek, the 5YO won the 2200m contest for 4YO+ Thoroughbreds by one and three quarter lengths. It was a one-two for Al Malki who saddled the runner-up, Jassim Bin Ali M A Al-Attiyah’s FIEROSPEED (IRE) (Zoffany), as well, who was ridden by Faleh Bughanaim. The Khalifa Bin Sheail KH J Al Kuwari-owned and Gassim Ghazali-trained was a further half length behind in third under Tadgh O’Shea.
SAHAB
Mohammed Bin Fahad A H Al Attiya’s SAHAB (FR) (AF AlBahar x Manella) landed the Qatar Silver Sword, as she topped the 1850m contest for 4YO Purebred Arabians by two lengths, recording a quick-fire double for trainer Alban de Mieulle and jockey Soufiane Saadi and a third victory for the trainer on the day. H.E. Issa Bin Mohammed Al Mohannadi, QREC Chairman, crowned the winners.
ABIDA
Umm Qarn retained the Qatar Silver Trophy as ABIDA (QA) (Dahess x Altesse D’aroco) landed the Local Purebred Arabian contest for 4YO+ over 1600m by three quarters of a length under Soufiane Saadi. The 6YO mare recorded a double on the day for Umm Qarn and trainer Alban de Mieulle. Abdulaziz Jassim Al Boenain, Al Uqda Complex Dept. Manager, presented the trophies to the winners.
SCHERZO
Al Wasmiyah Farm’s SCHERZO (FR) (Wootton Bassett x Persian Belle) bounced back quickly, getting one better than when last seen as he won the Al Wajba Trophy for 3YO Thoroughbreds over 1850m. Alberto Sanna doubled up on the day as he guided the Georges Mikhalides-trained colt to score by one and a half lengths and gain his fourth victory in nine career starts. Abdulla Rashid Al Kubaisi, QREC Racing Manager, crowned the winners.
TAXIWALA
The Osama Omer Al Dafea-owned and trained TAXIWALA (IRE) (Holy Roman Emperor x It’s True) got back to winning ways quickly, landing the Sealine Sprint Trophy for 3YO+ Thoroughbreds over 1200m, for the second year in a row. It was an easy by one and a quarter length vicotry. Ronan Thomas recorded a quick-fire double as he partnered the 5YO to his 11th victory. Abdulla Rashid Al Kubaisi, QREC Racing Manager, crowned the winners.
EQUINOXE
Umm Qarn’s homebred EQUINOXE (QA) (Atlantic Air x Thurayya) won the Local Thoroughbred Open Cup for 4YO+ over 1850m by one and three quarter lengths. The Alban de Mieulle-trained 5YO was ridden by Ronan Thomas to score for the seventh time in his last eight outings. Abdulla Rashid Al Kubaisi, QREC Racing Manager, crowned the winners.
A’LIA
H.E. Sheikha Yasmeen Bint Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani’s A’LIA (FR) (Amer x Djainka Des Forges) kicked off the evening going one better than when she was last seen, winning the 1600m Maiden for 4-6YO Purebred Arabians by two and a half lengths for trainer Rudy Nerbonne and jockey Alberto Sanna.
