Cyprus: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun declared that Lebanon refuses to be used as a bargaining chip in regional conflicts, emphasizing its commitment to negotiating solely for the protection of its sovereignty and national interests. He highlighted Lebanon's involvement in a US-backed diplomatic initiative, supported by the EU and Arab states, focused on ending Israeli attacks and ensuring a full withdrawal to internationally recognized borders.
According to Qatar News Agency, President Aoun addressed an informal meeting of EU leaders in Cyprus, where he emphasized Lebanon's dedication to de-escalation and diplomacy as the only path to lasting stability. He warned of the worsening humanitarian crisis caused by ongoing Israeli strikes, noting that over one million Lebanese have been displaced, infrastructure is severely damaged, thousands of raids have occurred, more than 10,000 casualties have been reported, and tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed.
Aoun also highlighted the strain on Lebanon due to hosting around one million Syrian refugees, calling for intensified international efforts to ensure their safe and dignified return. He reiterated Lebanon's commitment to economic reform and strengthening its partnership with the EU, urging for an international reconstruction conference, increased humanitarian funding, and sustained support for the Lebanese army as a pillar of stability.
In his concluding remarks, President Aoun stated that Lebanon remains a key partner in regional stability, energy security, and counterterrorism. He called for deeper international cooperation to support Lebanon's recovery and long-term stability.
