Qatar Highlights Dialogue and International Law in Middle East Conflict Resolution

New york: The State of Qatar emphasized the importance of serious dialogue, adherence to international law, and good neighbourliness as essential elements for resolving regional crises and mitigating their adverse impacts.

According to Qatar News Agency, this statement was delivered by Her Excellency Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, during the United Nations Security Council's quarterly open debate on the Middle East situation, including the Palestinian issue. The meeting, held amidst ongoing tensions in the Arabian Gulf since February 28, addressed multiple security concerns affecting international peace.

Her Excellency expressed Qatar's condemnation of the Islamic Republic of Iran's attacks on Qatar and other Gulf states, highlighting violations against national sovereignty and civilian infrastructure, which contravene international law and humanitarian principles. The UN Security Council Resolution 2817, introduced by Bahrain on behalf of the GCC and Jordan, with support from 136 countries, reinforced respect for territorial integrity and navigational rights in line with international law.

Concerning the Strait of Hormuz, the Qatari representative underscored the need for secure maritime routes and freedom of navigation, emphasizing the strait's significance to global energy security. She welcomed the US-Iran ceasefire announced on April 8 and commended Pakistan and other mediators for facilitating dialogue.

Addressing the Palestinian territories, Qatar criticized Israel's occupation and settlements in the West Bank and reaffirmed its commitment to a two-state solution based on 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital. The statement also called for the cessation of illegal Israeli practices in the region.

On the Gaza Strip situation, Her Excellency stressed the importance of fully implementing the ceasefire agreement and opening crossings for humanitarian aid. She reiterated Qatar's dedication to mediation, coordination with UN partners, and supporting reconstruction efforts for sustainable peace.

Qatar also affirmed its support for Syrian sovereignty and condemned Israeli actions violating international law. Additionally, it expressed solidarity with Lebanon, endorsing measures to secure its stability.

In conclusion, Qatar welcomed the ceasefire as a step towards de-escalation, appreciating mediation efforts, including those by US President Donald Trump, and emphasized the need to sustain and build upon the ceasefire achievements.
