Bethlehem - Ma'an - Many studies indicate that gut health is important for maintaining general health, as it helps reduce the risk of developing several diseases, such as Alzheimer's and diabetes.
A nutrition expert provided some important advice on how to maintain intestinal health, starting from eating foods rich in fiber every day, and even avoiding large meals for up to three hours before going to bed.
Other tips provided by Dr. Richard Allison, nutritionist at Herbalife, to help support gut health include staying hydrated throughout the day, chewing food at least 15-20 times, and introducing a new type of fruit or vegetable every week.
The intestine is known to be home to 70% of the body's immune cells. Dr Allison said: 'Not only do the intestines help digest food to support a healthy digestive system, but their function helps our bodies physically, and also has a huge impact on our day-to-day mental health.'
The alimentary tract, which usually refers to the organs of the digestive system, including the stomach, intestines and colon, plays a vital role in the healthy functioning of the human body.
The human medium intestine produces about 95% of serotonin, which is known as the 'happiness hormone,' and it plays an important role in regulating a person's mood.
According to Dr. Allison, the five most important tips for maintaining gut health are:
- Eat a new type of fruit or vegetable every week
Chew food at least 15-20 times
- Avoid large meals within three hours of going to bed
- Eat foods rich in fiber every day
- Keep your body hydrated, and drink plenty of water throughout the day
