Team Qatar swimmers win 5 medals at GCC Games

Kuwait- Team Qatar Swimmer Abdulaziz Al Obaidly claimed Qatar’s only gold of the day in the third GCC Games in Kuwait on Thursday.

Al Obaidly powered to first place in the men’s 200M individual medley, clocking 2:08.33. His team-mate Omer Abouelela won the silver, timing 2:09.20. UAE’s Salem Ghalib (2:11.32) took home the bronze.

It was Al Obaidly’s second gold of the meet. He had triumphed in the 400M medley, besides winning silver medals in the 4x100 freestyle relay and 4x100 medley relay.

Qatar won two more silver and a bronze medal on the final day of the swimming competition.

The Qatari 4x200 freestyle relay team timed 8:01.41 to finish behind Kuwait (7:52.94), with Oman claiming the bronze in 8:06.28. The Qatar quartet comprised Tameem Elhamayda, Abdalla Elghamry, Mohamed Mohamed and Omar Aboulela.

Mohamed won two other medals on the day – silver in the 100M breaststroke and bronze in the 50M freestyle. The Qatari timed 1:05.48 to finish second in the breast stroke behind Rashed Al Tarmoom (1:02.81) of Kuwait. UAE’s Omar Mohammed was third in 1:09.69.

In the 50M freestyle, Mohamed splashed to the third place in 23.83 seconds. Waleed Abdulrazzaq of Kuwait struck gold in 23.26 while Yousif Bu Arish of Saudi Arabia claimed silver in 23.62.

Qatar continue to be in third place on the medals table, with 11 gold, 13 silver and nine bronze medals. Bahrain lead with 17 gold, 15 silver and eight bronze while hosts Kuwait (16-14-16) are a touch behind.
