Doha: The United Nations Press freedom is a cornerstone of peace and sustainable development amid rising conflicts, inequality, rapid technological shifts, and the spread of disinformation.
According to Qatar News Agency, in a joint statement marking World Press Freedom Day 2026, UN leaders stressed that the free flow of ideas depends on safeguarding freedom of expression and ensuring independent, pluralistic media that deliver reliable information and foster international cooperation.
The statement underscored that freedom of expression, enshrined in Article 19 of international human rights law, is fundamental to democratic governance, the rule of law, and the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
It also highlighted the role of independent media in countering misinformation, promoting accountability, and supporting dialogue, while condemning violence and violations against journalists, including killings, arbitrary detention, harassment, and digital abuse.
The UN reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom in the digital age and called for stronger protections, transparency, and safe, enabling environments for journalists worldwide.
