US Announces New Military Assistance for Ukraine

General

The United States has announced another package of weapons and equipment to Ukraine, including cluster munitions. The US Department of State said that this additional assistance is valued at $375 million, and it includes additional munitions and support for HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System); artillery ammunition; cluster munitions; armored; light tactical vehicles; and patrol boats. Cluster munitions are air-dropped or ground-launched weapons that release a number of smaller submunitions. Cluster bombs scatter bomblets across a wide area. Many of the submunitions do not explode on impact but remain a threat like landmines until they are disturbed. More than 100 countries have banned their use. Conflicting reports continue to emerge regarding the situation on the ground in southern Russia, as Russian forces assert they have repelled Ukrainian incursions, while Ukraine insists that its troops have successfully breached Russian defenses in Kursk. For several months, Ukrainian forces have been c onducting near-daily drone and missile attacks on Russian border regions, including Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Voronezh, and Rostov, as well as the Crimean Peninsula.
