HE Premier: Arab Nations Call on Syria’s Assad to Step Down

Doha, July 23 (QNA) - HE Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani, Chairman of the Arab Ministerial Committee on Syria, said that there is an Arab consensus, calling for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step aside quickly in return for safe exit.
 Speaking to reporters following the Arab Ministerial Committee on Syrian Crisis' meeting in Doha last night, HE the Premier said that this is the first Arab League's clear and explicit call for al-Assad to step down.
 HE also called on the opposition and the Syrian army to form a transitional government.
     HE Prime Minister and Foreign Minister stressed that the resolution, adopted by the participants in meeting, is good but needs to be more advanced.
 In response to a question if there is an objection from an Arab country over al-Assad's resignation, HE the Premier said that only one country will express objection.
 HE the Prime Minister stressed that President al-Assad will take a courageous decision in order to save his country.

HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani said that it is time for President al-Assad to take a courageous step in order to save his country and his people and stop the bloodshed.
 Asked about providing a safe haven for the Syrian president in case he steps down from power, HE said that this is mentioned in the resolution adopted at the ministerial meeting.
 Responding to another question about some press leaks saying that Bashar al-Assad had requested a mediation from a country and expressed his willingness to step aside in return for a safe exit for him and his family, HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister said that he had no information on this matter.
 Regarding Chinese and Russian positions towards the crisis, HE announced that he would travel, in his capacity as Chairman of the Arab Ministerial Committee on Syria, to Beijing and Moscow to hold talks in this regard because the situation requires their stand with the Arab peoples, and because the only solution is to stop the bloodbath which needs a courageous decision from the Syrian regime to step down.
 The International Community can do more, but President Bashar al-Assad can do more than anyone else to put an end to the destruction and the killings by taking a courageous step, HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim said.
 After it failed to address the Syrian crisis, the UN-Arab League joint special envoy to Syria Kofi Annan's mission needs to be change towards arranging a peaceful transition of the power, HE explained.
 Regarding the possibility of the success of the opposition to form a transitional government, HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister said it must be united inside and abroad to form the transitional government.
 The transitional government will not remain forever and the opposition must agree among themselves on the next step, HE added.
    HE also announced that the meeting agreed to offer $100 million in aid to Syrian refugees. (QNA)
