A 4.7-magnitude earthquake hits northwest Iran

The city of Khoy, in the north of West Azerbaijan Province, located in northwest Iran, was hit by a strong earthquake, this evening, Saturday, with a magnitude of 4.7 on the nine-point Richter scale.

The IRNA news agency quoted today, Saturday evening, the National Seismological Center of the University of Tehran as saying that the earthquake in Khoy had a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale.

The Iranian Observatory confirmed that the earthquake occurred in the city of Khoy at 4:43 pm this afternoon, Saturday, specifying the epicenter of the earthquake at the convergence of the north latitude 44.9 and the east longitude 38.51 degrees.

Director General of the Emergency Authority in East Azerbaijan Province, Muhammad Baqir Henrbez, confirmed that the people of the city of Tabriz, in the center of the province, felt the tremors of the earthquake that hit Khoy today.

Baqir Henrbez indicated that this accident did not record any human or material losses despite its severe tremors that reached the governorate, noting that the rescue and relief teams went to the site of the accident, immediately after it occurred.

The city of Shawqan in Khorasan Province, northern Iran, was hit, on the third of this month, by a strong earthquake measuring 4 degrees on the Richter scale.
