Al Wakra: Al Maha Specialized Pediatric Care Center at Al Wakra Hospital, part of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), is highlighting its commitment to high-quality, person-centered services for children with Down Syndrome and their families – efforts marking World Down Syndrome Day. The center offers comprehensive medical, therapeutic, and social support programs focused on early intervention, development, and family empowerment.

According to Qatar News Agency, through a multidisciplinary and holistic approach, Al Maha Center ensures individualized care that promotes each child’s growth, well-being, and inclusion in society. Services include developmental screenings, evaluations, and tailored interventions based on evidence-based therapies, supporting children in achieving their fullest potential in a nurturing environment.

Currently, Al Maha Specialized Pediatric Care Center provides care for over 120 children with Down Syndrome, offering therapeutic interventions and family training programs led by a multidisciplinary team. This team includes developmental pediatricians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, special education experts, and pediatric psychologists, all working collaboratively to enhance each child’s quality of life.

“Strengthening our support systems ensures that children with Down Syndrome receive the necessary care, education, and opportunities to thrive. With parental support, medical guidance, and inclusive community support, individuals with Down Syndrome can achieve an optimal quality of life,” said CEO and Medical Director Al Wakra Hospital Dr. Omar Mohammed Al Qahtani.

New referrals come from HMC’s maternity hospitals and primary health centers, where each child undergoes a thorough medical and developmental assessment. Based on their needs, they are referred to early intervention programs or therapy services. Families receive ongoing support, including parent counseling, therapy sessions, and access to assistive technologies that enhance communication and learning.

Aligned with the global theme, “Improve Our Support Systems,” Al Maha will host an inclusive community event on March 20, featuring engaging activities designed to celebrate and support children with Down Syndrome. Interactive play and learn stations, arts and crafts, obstacle courses, and face painting will provide a fun and educational experience for families. Additionally, assistive technology stations will showcase innovative tools for learning and communication, helping children enhance their independence and engagement.

Through its unwavering dedication to compassionate and specialized pediatric care, Al Maha Specialized Pediatric Care Center continues to play a pivotal role in improving the lives of children with Down Syndrome and their families, ensuring they receive the best possible opportunities for growth, development, and social participation.
