American police removed yesterday evening, Friday, a camp of pro-Palestine protesters at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and moved to expel the demonstrators from the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. This move came just hours after it fired tear gas at demonstrators and dispersed a sit-in at the University of Arizona. In Cambridge, Massachusetts, a video clip showed police officers walking around the Massachusetts Institute of Technology sit-in camp. Organizers said that about 10 students were arrested. Riot police arrived around 4 a.m., cordoned off the camp and gave protesters about 15 minutes to leave. A crowd outside the camp began to gather and chant pro-Palestinian slogans, but they were dispersed by 6 a.m. At the University of Arizona, campus police equipped with riot gear late fired tear gas at demonstrators before demolishing a sit-in camp that included wooden and plastic barriers on campus. The University of Arizona said in a statement that it made the decisi on because the camp violated university policy. In Philadelphia, early Friday local time, police arrested people who had been in a camp set up on the University of Pennsylvania campus for more than two weeks, and police moved to the site after warning pro-Palestinian demonstrators to leave the campus or face possible arrest.
