Eruption of Mayon Volcano Affects Villages in Albay Province

Albay province: The Philippine authorities announced on Sunday that the Mayon Volcano, the country's most active volcano, has erupted, blanketing surrounding villages in ash.

According to Qatar News Agency, approximately 52 villages around the volcano in Albay province, located 330 kilometers southeast of Manila, have been affected. Lava has begun flowing down the mountain's slopes, prompting authorities to initiate preemptive evacuations, particularly in areas within the designated danger zone.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has issued warnings about potential hazards, including landslides, rockfalls, lava flows, volcanic fountains, and explosions of moderate strength. This adds to the urgency of evacuation efforts and preparedness measures being undertaken by local authorities.

Historically, Mayon Volcano has been notorious for its violent eruptions. The most catastrophic event occurred in 1814, resulting in the death of more than 1,200 people and the burial of an entire town under volcanic ash. Another significant eruption took place in 1993, claiming 79 lives.
