King Charles III Visits Germany on First Overseas Trip as Monarch

King Charles III will arrive in Germany with the Queen Consort Wednesday, on his first state visit abroad since becoming British monarch.

The German authorities took strict security measures in the capital, Berlin, where King Charles III and Camilla will stay for two days, before they head to Hamburg Friday, and then return to London.

British Ambassador to Berlin Jill Gallard said in statements that the visit was a recommendation from the British government, noting: "It is no coincidence that this will be the first visit to Europe." She added that Charles' visit aims to show that though Britain has left the European Union, it has not left Europe.

The trip should have started on Sunday in France but the first leg was scrapped amid strikes and civil unrest in the country over pension reforms.
