Nibras Mohamed Talib, CEO of the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) and Chairman of the National Committee for Combatting Trafficking in Persons met with Ilias Chatzis, Chief of the Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section (HTMSS) at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), on the sidelines of the CEO’s participation in the 13th meeting of the Working Group on Trafficking in Persons held in Austria.
The meeting discussed strengthening the strategic partnership and ongoing cooperation between Bahrain and UNODC in the field of combating trafficking in persons.
LMRA CEO affirmed the Kingdom's commitment to support international efforts to address the crime of trafficking in persons.
He outlined Bahrain’s pioneering efforts in combatting this transborder crime, which has generated international recognition on various levels.
Chatzis said that the crime of trafficking in persons is one of the most grievous organised crimes that threaten the security and stability of societies, calling for concerted international and the UN efforts to raise awareness of this cross-border crime and address it in a way that enhances social security at the national and international levels.
Talib highlighted the role of the UN and its affiliated organizations, especially UNODC, in reinforcing regional and international cooperation to address the crime of trafficking in persons and promote awareness of evolving practices in the work environment.
He praised the well-established partnership and continuous coordination with UNODC for the GCC countries, lauding the role of the Office in supporting the Kingdom's efforts to develop its integrated prevention and protection system and training national and regional cadres in the field of combating trafficking in persons in line with the applicable standards and international best practices.
