Qatar Participates in High-Level Meeting on Rohingya Refugees

Bangkok, The State of Qatar participated in the 2023 High-Level Meeting on Rohingya Refugees, held in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

HE Director of the Department of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Ali bin Shaheen Al Kaabi represented the State of Qatar at the meeting.

HE Director of the Department of International Cooperation at MOFA said in his speech that the Rohingya refugee crisis does not only affect the countries of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), rather, it casts a shadow over other regions as well.

His Excellency stressed that the State of Qatar is committed to humanitarian efforts aimed at helping the world deal with all sorts of crises and challenges, including that of the Rohingya refugees, adding that Qatar has discussed this issue with many ASEAN countries in an effort to find sustainable solutions for these refugees, in addition to having supported various development and relief projects in the Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh.

He indicated that the State of Qatar is working with Malaysia, Indonesia, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to improve Rohingya refugees' access to basic services, explaining that the State of Qatars support and partnership help local authorities and communities hosting Rohingya refugees to host them.

His Excellency said that the State of Qatar focuses mainly on educating Rohingya refugees, especially at the pre-school level, as well as on providing them with health care and economic empowerment.

HE Director of the Department of International Cooperation at MOFA explained that these efforts offer short-term solutions to the Rohingya refugee issue, stressing the urgent need to find a permanent and sustainable solution to ensure their return and well-being, away from persecution and discrimination.

He added that in order to achieve this goal, the international community must participate and cooperate with these countries in their efforts, as well as for it to bear responsibility with these countries to resolve the Rohingya refugees crisis.
