S. Korea and US Pledge Enhanced Security Cooperation and Defense Modernization

South korea: South Korea and the United States have reached an agreement to enhance their collaboration in areas concerning "mutual security interest." This includes South Korea's initiative to regain wartime operational control (OPCON) from the United States and joint efforts to modernize the defense alliance.

According to Qatar News Agency, South Korea's Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back and US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed these commitments during discussions at the Pentagon on Monday night. The meeting aligns with South Korea's broader efforts to establish a more self-reliant defense system by regaining wartime command from the US.

The Pentagon released a joint readout stating that both leaders agreed to maintain close contact and further cooperate on mutual security interests. The statement also emphasized the significance of the Korea-US Integrated Defense Dialogue (KIDD), a key bilateral consultation platform focusing on the wartime OPCON issue, to advance alliance cooperation and serve both nations' interests.
