Serbia’s PM Resigns Following Popular Protests

Belgrade: Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic announced today his resignation from office, in the wake of popular protests and demonstrations against corruption and demanding the overthrow of the government. Vucevic said at a press conference that he chose this step in order to ease tensions, adding that the mayor of Novi Sad, the country’s second largest city, would also resign. He stressed that with this step, they met all the protesters’ most stringent demands.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Serbian capital Belgrade and other regions have been witnessing anti-government protests since the partial collapse of the roof of a railway station in Novi Sad last November, which left 15 people dead. Protesters, including students, teachers, and workers, came out by thousands, blaming the incident on corruption within the government.

On Friday, Serbia witnessed a large-scale student strike that led to the closure of several companies across the country, while prosecutors announced charges against 13 state officials over the partial collapse of the roof of the station. Milos Vucevic has been the head of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party since 2023.
