Baku: The Shura Council participated in the 15th plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly and its accompanying meetings, held over four days in Baku, under the theme “Role of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening multilateral cooperation in Asia”. The session concluded its activities on Thursday.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Shura Council was represented by HE Shura Council Member and Vice President of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly Eng. Ahmed bin Hitmi Al Hitmi, along with Their Excellencies Council Members Saoud bin Jassim Al Buainain and Nasser bin Metrif Al Hemeidi. During the session, discussions centered on the role of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening multilateral cooperation in Asia. HE Eng. Ahmed bin Hitmi Al Hitmi reaffirmed Qatar’s firm stance in supporting just causes, particularly the Palestinian issue, emphasizing it as a test of the international community’s humanity.
HE Eng. Al Hitmi highlighted that the Palestinian people are facing unprecedented aggression threatening their existence and legitimate rights. He stressed Qatar’s clear position in supporting the Palestinians both politically and humanely, asserting that peace cannot be achieved without justice, nor stability without ending the occupation. He urged Asian parliaments to defend Palestinian rights through parliamentary diplomacy in international forums.
Additionally, His Excellency discussed the importance of joint parliamentary work in addressing challenges faced by Asian countries. He emphasized the need for enhanced dialogue and communication between Asian parliaments, aiming to strengthen the international presence of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly. Al Hitmi underscored the role of parliamentary diplomacy in enhancing dialogue and understanding among peoples, extending beyond legislation to foster cooperation in political, economic, and social fields.
HE Eng. Ahmed bin Hitmi Al Hitmi concluded by asserting the opportunity for the Asian Parliamentary Assembly to shape the continent’s future, calling for joint efforts to serve Asian peoples’ interests and entrench multilateral cooperation principles. The session addressed issues such as Qatar’s re-election as Vice President of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly for 2025, and enhancing joint parliamentary work on regional and international matters.
The meetings reviewed draft resolutions from standing committees. The session concluded with the “Baku Declaration,” welcoming a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages in Gaza, condemning discrimination, and calling for tolerance and inclusion. It emphasized women’s and youth’s active participation, regional cooperation in various sectors, and promoting sustainable development goals, focusing on poverty reduction, food security, and healthcare.
